Created in Spain in the 1960s by Alfonso Caycedo, a neuropsychiatrist, sophrology means “study of consciousness in harmony”. A skilful blend of yoga, Buddhist relaxation exercises and tai chi, this discipline is an effective antidote to ambient stress and winter depression. Appeared in France in 1966, it “improves self-confidence by being a powerful shield against external aggression,” says Benoît Fouché *, sophrologist and president of the French Society of Sophrology. Initially, its use was mainly medical, to treat serious pathologies such as schizophrenia. Today, its action has widened: more and more stressed people are using it.

Its principles?

Positive: “The objective is to drive out negative thoughts from our mind, to boost our self-esteem and to control our emotions”, continues the specialist. To achieve this, the practitioners, called “sophronisers”, try to conquer, alone or in a group, by body movements, their inner universe. “We are working on abdominal and thoracic breathing exercises, called dynamic relaxation,” emphasizes Benoît Fouché. We breathe, creating columns of air in our body. Thanks to various postures like “kissing the tree”, one develops his imagination with restful images, such as the waves of the ocean. The goal is to reach a modified state of consciousness called the sophroliminal level. The body is awake, the muscles are relaxed, the mind is relaxed. “

What are the benefits?

During the session, the sophronizers concentrated on themselves and thus escaped external stimuli. When you wake up, yawns multiply, muscles come back to life, and bodies stretch as if after a night’s sleep. “This technique of concentration makes it possible to seek feelings, states of mind, to explore our internal space”, concludes Benoît Fouché. Result: detoxified from negative waves, we are more confident to face the world.

Who is this discipline for?

To people oppressed by their daily lives and who want to clear their heads. On the other hand, sophrology requires a certain rigor: it must be worked at home.
